In Vyrathis, where power is drawn from oath and enforced by the Pale Court, some of the Vyrathe turn instead to Eriseth, the Unseen Flame. It is no judge and it keeps no contracts. It is a shadowed presence that offers forbidden knowledge of the soul and of death, the kind of truth the houses spend their power burying, to anyone willing to pay in their own suffering. The price is always self-inflicted. A worshipper of Eriseth gives up pieces of their own body, memory, or mortality to buy a glimpse past the veil.
Those who follow it are heretics in the eyes of the Pale Court, walking the narrow line between pact and possession. They burn away their mortality to see further, and the further they see, the less of them remains. A rare few come back changed and luminous with stolen truth. Most simply burn, and what answers the Unseen Flame in their place is rarely still the person who lit it.
